01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

MainVest, founded in 2018 in Salem, Massachusetts by Nick Mathews, Ben Blieden and Felix Le Dem, was a FINRA-registered Regulation Crowdfunding funding portal — the self-described investment platform for Main Street. It let ordinary investors put as little as $100 into local brick-and-mortar businesses (mostly restaurants, breweries and cafes) through revenue-sharing notes. Between October 2018 and early 2024 the portal hosted 779 offerings and deployed nearly $40 million of community capital into small businesses across the United States.

02 / MainVest FAILURE REASONS

Failure factors

Boston Globe reported Mainvest would shut in June 2024 because (1) Synapse, its banking intermediary, filed bankruptcy in April 2024 freezing processing, and (2) Mainvest had been unable to raise additional capital in 2022 and downsized; CEO Nick Matthews said without Synapse the firm would still be operating. FOX4 quotes Mainvest that Synapse uncertainty was the catalyst amid pandemic/VC-fintech fundraising difficulty.

External Shock

Bankruptcy of banking intermediary Synapse froze payment processing and catalyzed shutdown.

Capital

Company unable to raise additional funding in 2022 and downsized.
